If you are a sports aficionado, take your pick from cricket, polo, sailing, watersports, golf, horseracing, and motorsports like car racing and rally. What a list!
CRICKET…Lovely Cricket
If you love cricket…then you must head your way to the cricket mecca, Kensington Oval, to experience a fun-filled cricket match. Both the five-day and one-day matches are brimming with excitement, fast-bowler spins and thrills, music, loud chatter and of course Bajan rum! Some people go for the love of cricket; others go just for the lime. Either way, a good time is sure to be had.
HORSERACING
The Sandy Lane Gold Club, held annually in March, attracts visitors to the island who follow horseracing. It takes place at the historic Garrison Savannah, part of the UNESCO World Heritage site. Betting is the order of the day…so are fancy ladies' hats or "fascinators"! Feel the drum of excitement as the horses' hooves gallop by in a frenzy with the finishing line in sight.
If you visit Barbados at any other time of the year, you will still have the opportunity to indulge in more horseracing action throughout the year.
GOLF
Barbados boasts stunning golf courses with the likes of Sandy Lane, Rockley Golf Club and Barbados Golf Club. Tee off, sink a hole-in-one or a birdie on any of these golf courses and feel like a pro!
POLO
Horse and man unite in this riveting sport of polo! Enjoy the open spaces and refreshing breezes at Apes Hill and Holder's Hill while you witness the horseback fun on the fields.
While at Polo you may get to meet and mingle with the 'who's who" of Barbados such as construction magnates Ralph 'Bizzy" Williams and his brother COW Williams while sipping on tea or Piper Heidsieck champagne. You may even have the envious opportunity to be in royal company when Prince Harry attends a match or two when on our shores!
SAILING
If you are a sailing fanatic, be sure to visit Barbados early in the year, in January, to experience the awesome Mount Gay Regatta. What a sight to behold to see the colourful dinghies dancing and bobbing in the brilliant blue waters! There are other regattas dotted throughout the year; sit back on the sand, relax and take in the wonderful view of a group of sailboats sailing in the distance.
